What’s showing today:
Maxine Peake plays the gritty role of ‘Funny Cow’, a comedian who breaks through the glass ceiling of the all-male 1970s comedy circuit to rise to stardom. Set against the backdrop of working men’s clubs in the North of England, Funny Cow is both a love-letter to a bygone era and the defiant story of a woman who refuses to give up her dreams.
Let The Sunshine In
Inspired by Roland Barthe’s A Lovers Discourse, Claire Denis and the novelist Christine Angot created a moody and wistful romantic comedy featuring Juliette Binoche in one of her most compelling and demanding roles.
Denis and Angot drew from their own lives and experiences to explore the romantic and amorous relationships of a woman in her fifties, recently divorced, and in search of a meaningful love. A love that is relevant and moving. A love that resonates physically and emotionally.
Phillip Goodman, professor of psychology, arch-skeptic, the one-man ‘belief buster’ – has his rationality tested to the hilt when he receives a letter apparently from beyond the grave. His mentor Charles Cameron, the ‘original’ TV parapsychologist went missing fifteen years before, presumed dead and yet now he writes to Goodman saying that the pair must meet. Cameron, it seems, is still very much alive. And he needs Goodman to find a rational explanation for three stories that have shaken Cameron to his core. As Goodman investigates, he meets three haunted people, each with a tale more frightening, uncanny and inexplicable than the last.
