What:
The Orange Tree is a theatre in the round, enabling actors to perform ‘close-up magic’. With the audience wrapped around the players, acting becomes ‘the centre of the experience’ they say. Over its 45 year history the Orange Tree has had an exceptional track record in discovering writers and promoting their early work, as well as rediscovering artists from the past whose work had either been disregarded or forgotten. Since Paul Miller took over as Artistic Director in 2014, he has sought to maintain that balance, carrying on the tradition of Sam Walters, the Orange Tree’s founder and sole artistic director for 43 years.

Their work has been recognised with numerous industry awards, recently including ten Offies (Off West End Awards), four UK Theatre Awards, the Alfred Fagon Audience Award and the Peter Brook Empty Space Award, over a period of just two years. Paul Miller has turned the Orange Tree into a national theatre, with co-productions and national tours of many of its productions. Since 2016 the Orange Tree’s work was seen in over 30 other towns and cities across the country. “I want to get more of the world in to the Orange Tree and the Orange Tree to get out in to the world” he says.
