Little Bird attracts you in from the moment you poke your nose inside the door. The decor is fabulous; very colourful, very feminine, with comfy chairs, lots of velvet and interesting lamps everywhere. It also has nooks and crannies, so even when crowded, can feel intimate. It also has the advantage of the little garden out the back, so this hot weather you can sit outdoors at the front or at the back, and the breeze blows through.

Whether you come for cocktails, or food – and it’s about fifty-fifty, people do both or either, you can expect fresh, tasty options, with a sharing menu that arrives not in any particular order and a large range of cocktails, some classic, some newly invented by General Manager, Joe Angliss.

Head chef Jamal was previously at Annie’s, the first of Lorraine Angliss’s five restaurants, which opened 18 years ago. Little Bird is baby of the family, celebrating its third birthday with five star reviews on Trip Advisor, a new summer menu and some new cocktails added to the list.

I started with a Take It Easy – Bacardi Blanca, ginger, pineapple and lime juice – tropical but not too sweet.

I had Fresh Crab Arancini from the fish menu – rice cooked in white wine and vegetable stock, mixed with crab meat, rolled into balls, covered with a coating of breadcrumbs and fried till crisp, served with lemon aioli. Delicious. Also the Salmon Teriyaki – salmon cooked in sesame and soy sauce. Also very tasty and tender.

I then had the house favourite, the Butter Chicken Curry, with sesame nan bread, rice and toasted almonds. It’s medium hot, with a nice rich sauce and you get a generous portion. Other meat options include Slow Cooked lamb with flat bread and hummus, Spicy Pork Belly and Angus sirloin steak with salsa verde and roast tomatoes. There are three vegetarian options – Indian Dahl Curry, Grilled Halloumi and Filo Feta Cheese, as well as side dishes: Sauted Greens, Guacamole, Hummus, Edamame, Sweet Potatoe Fries, Courgettte Fritti and Jasmine Rice.

The trouble with not sharing a sharing platter is that if you try a few things you’re soon full! So I didn’t try the dessert – a doughnut kebab with toffee and chocolate sauce, tempting though that sounded. I may have to go back …
