Heroes of Chiswick
Hundreds of men from Chiswick gave their lives in the ‘Great War’. The parish of St Michael managed to get some lottery funding in 2013 to do research into the 33 men who are commemorated in their Roll of Honour on the memorial inside St Michael’s Church, Elmwood Rd. One of the stories they uncovered was that of a teenager who had lied about his age to join up, who we know about through heart rending letters from his mother entreating him to wait at least until he was of age. The church developed a play called ‘My Darling Boy’ from their story, performed by St Michael’s Palyers.
Vicar Martine Oborne and parishioner Steve Newbold talk to Bridget Osborne about some of the remarkable stories of bravery and sacrifice uncovered by their research.
