Fine and Rare Books Auction

12.00pm, Monday 14 May

London Auctions, 34 Chiswick High Rd, W4 1TE

In addition to their weekly general auctions on Mondays, from time to time London Auctions has specialist auctions. Today’s auction of fine and rare books includes many of intriguing provenance. One of the top lots is two large oblong folio photograph albums circa 1875 – 1885 with early images of the Hong Kong Harbour Race Course, Hong Kong Bank and Cricket Field, Canton set of San Francisco, California and Canada; Launceston Tasmania and Hobart, early views of Adelaide and Melbourne, Maori Portraits, Sydney, Aboriginal images, Portraits of Arabs, and life in Colombo, including Tamil portraits. (Lot 33). Other key lots are a unique First World War album of emotive and rare contemporary postcards and original photographs, one of which shows early attempts to take aerial photographs by strapping a camera to the wing of a fighter plane. (Lot 31) And a specially bound book presented to Queen Victoria on her coronation which includes a bizarre watercolour featuring the young Victoria being drawn heavenwards by a fairy carriage. (Lot 35). There is an album of exquisite and stunningly executed pen and ink drawings by the gifted illustrator Betty Hill, who as a woman in the 1930s was eclipsed because of her gender. (Lot 143)
